The next meeting, September 13th, will feature a presentation by David Goldsmith on the era of record breaking international flights to and from Lympne. David will also tell the story of those who failed to break any records through mishap, bad weather, accidents and navigational error. This meaty subject is a human story in equal measure of glory, fame, fortune, bravery, sadness and death.
We will witness the exploits of Amy Johnson, Jean Batten, Jim Mollison, Charles Kingsford Smith, Jimmy Broadbent, Bill Lancaster and many others. Some of these household names of the times have had films made about them in the following years. In many cases these flights were made from Lympne, and or returned here. As famous as Premiership footballers today, our airfield was the centre of these flights as international newspaper reporters and photographers together with Pathe newsreel camera crews descended on Lympne.
The meeting starts at 7.30pm in the East Bar of Lympne Castle. We look forward to seeing you there.
